What is Basic Attention Token?
The “Basic Attention Token” (BAT) is an Ethereum-based open-source, decentralized ad exchange network.
Users, authors, and marketers are both being let down by the $330 billion digital ads market. The Basic Attention Token addresses the digital ad industry’s chronic inefficiencies and privacy abuses.
How does BAT work?
Users of the Brave browser have been able to opt into the Brave Rewards feature, which sends BAT micropayments to websites and content creators, since April 2019.
Owners and developers of websites must first register as publishers with Brave. Users may opt for auto-contribute, which splits a monthly donation in proportion to the amount of time invested, or manually submit a given amount (referred to as a tip) when visiting the site or maker.
Users can earn BAT by watching ads that are shown as reminders by their machine or device’s operating system.
Users are paired with advertising campaigns based on their search history; this targeting is done centrally, with no sensitive details sent beyond the browser, obviating the need for third-party monitoring.
Additionally, or similarly, users may purchase or sell BAT through Brave’s partnership with Uphold Inc., a digital currency exchange.
Brave Payments was the first iteration of the micropayments function, which was introduced in 2016 and used Bitcoin.
What is the History of BAT?
Brave Software revealed plans for a privacy-respecting ad-mode and a revenue-sharing scheme on January 20, 2016, when it released the first beta of Brave with an ad-blocking feature.
Brave ran on a fork of Electron named Muon until December 2018, which they sold as a “more stable fork.” Despite this, Brave developers switched to Chromium to reduce their maintenance load.
Brave Software launched the final Muon-based edition with the goal of it ceasing to function, and advised users to upgrade as the deadline approached.
Brave began testing a new ad-blocking rule-matching algorithm written in Rust in June 2019, replacing the previous C++ algorithm. The current reasoning was influenced by the uBlock Origin and Ghostery algorithms, which Brave says is 69 times faster than the previous one.
On a regular basis, it had about 3 million active users at the moment. According to Engadget, Brave 1.0, which is available for Android, iOS, Windows 10, macOS, and Linux, integrates “nearly all of Brave’s marquee functionality across all devices.”
Brave estimated getting 20 million monthly users in November 2020, and 25 million monthly active users in February 2021.
