John McAfee, noted entrepreneur and later political activist, was discovered dead and is suspected to have committed suicide in his Barcelona jail cell at Brians 2 Penitentiary hours after the Spanish National Court authorized his extradition to the United States on tax fraud charges, according to the Catalan Justice Department on June 23, 2021.
McAfee’s death was verified by the Catalan judicial department to Reuters.
Earlier in the day, McAfee’s extradition to the United States was authorized by Spain’s National Court. McAfee, who earned his wealth selling antivirus software, was detained at Barcelona’s airport last October and kept in custody while extradition proceedings were conducted.
According to a statement by the Catalonia regional government’s Justice Department, which oversees prisons in the area, after discovering McAfee, prison medical professionals and guards tried but failed to conduct life-saving operations. According to the statement, “everything points to” McAfee’s death by suicide.
McAfee’s Involvement in Crypto
McAfee was accused of avoiding taxes in Tennessee by neglecting to report income from cryptocurrencies and speaking fees, as well as selling the rights to his life narrative to a documentary.
McAfee was resisting extradition and stated to the court earlier this month that if he was transported to the United States, he would be forced to spend the rest of his life in jail. The outspoken mogul’s Twitter account remained active during his imprisonment, supporting cryptocurrencies and raging against his trial.
In his later years, McAfee was a controversial figure, accused of engaging in suspected “pump and dump” scams and being paid to promote a number of initial coin offerings without reporting the payments.
A three-judge panel at Spain’s National Court in Madrid decided earlier Wednesday that McAfee might be extradited to the United States to face charges there, according to a National Court spokeswoman. According to court records, the judgment might have been appealed to a bigger panel of justices at the same court.
McAfee was detained in Spain in October after being charged with tax evasion in the United States a few months before. According to court papers, he reportedly neglected to file taxes for four years while making millions of dollars from marketing cryptocurrency, consultancy work, speaking engagements, and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary between 2014 and 2018.
McAfee was also charged with fraud and money laundering in March. According to the US Department of Justice, he and a business partner were involved in a conspiracy to defraud unsuspecting investors out of more than $13 million by fraudulently advertising cryptocurrencies.
